Soloists Win Recognition

Park of the T.L. Hanna High School Jazz
Ensemble was recently named as an
outstanding soloist at the Frank
Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier High
School in Chicago Illinois on February 6th.
Sam is a junior. He serves as
Clarinet Section leader of the T.L.
Hanna Bands and is lead alto in the Jazz
Band. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Jae Park,
Sam was selected an outstanding soloist
by composer and arranger Fred Sturm,
director of the Lawrence University Jazz
Ensemble.
This year marked the third time
T.L. Hanna has performed at this
prestigious festival, which features
some of the finest professional jazz
ensembles and performers in the county.
The T.L. Hanna Band Students performed
on stage at the festival and were
critiqued by some of the country’s most
outstanding professional musicians and
educators. The band members also
participated in master classes and
seminars at the festival.
The evening concert at the
festival featured the internationally
recognized Village Vanguard Jazz
Orchestra from New York. The T.L. Hanna
Band Members also spent a day in the
city, touring the Field Museum, the Navy
Pier, Southside Chicago and attending
a performance of Blue Man Group.
The T.L. Hanna Ensemble
performed three selections which include
“Libertango” by Astor Piazzolla, “Misty”
by Erroll Garner and “Groovin’ Hard” by
Don Menza. Soloists for the T.L. Hanna
Jazz Band this performance included Sam
Park on Alto Sax, Gabriel Bertolini on
Tenor Sax, Adam Chabek on Baritone Sax,
Alessandra Small on Trombone and Langdon
Hammond on Drum Set.

Alessandra Small was named outstanding
soloist at the South Carolina State Jazz
Festival held at Newberry College on March
6th.
Sophmore
Jerry Wiles was named to one of the All
State Jazz Bands which also performed at the
Jazz Festival.

The Jazz Band
is an optional activity which is organized
after Marching Season. (Usually late Oct.
early Nov). The Jazz Band meets after school
on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm to
5:30pm.
Membership is
open to all interested Marching Band
Students. Students register for this as a
class and receive a grade and full unit
credit for their participation.
The T.L. Hanna High School Jazz Ensemble
was established in 1968 by Ray Doughty,
former State Supervisor of Music for the
South Carolina Department of Education. This
ensemble is one of the oldest public school
groups of its kind in the State of South
Carolina. The Jazz Ensemble has a rich and
varied history and has appeared at the IAJE
(International Association of Jazz Education.

Whitt are the directors of the T.L. Hanna
Jazz Ensemble.
